Overview
At the beginning of the 2002-03 school year, the San Diego Unified School District was awarded a three-year, $600,000 grant from The Annie E. Casey Foundation. Since its inception in 1948, the Foundation has worked to build better futures for disadvantaged children and their families by fostering more effective public policies, human service reforms, and community support.

The Casey grant supports a number of projects and activities, including development of the Parent Communications and Involvement Standards, Parent Congress events and the creation and publication of over one hundred fact sheets for parents and the school community. As additional areas in which we can improve communications to parents are identified, projects and activities to meet those needs will be developed.

Workplan
The Communications Department developed a three-year Workplan outlining specific actions to be taken to meet provisions of the Casey grant. Actions items include development and distribution of standards for parent communication and involvement, as well as implementation of a more parent-friendly web presence.

Parent Communications and Involvement Workgroup
In January 2003, the Workgroup was formed to gather ideas, strategies, and techniques for publishing district-wide standards for parent communications and involvement. The group is comprised of parents, district advisory committee group leaders, parent organization presidents, principals, teachers, parent academic liaisons from Title I schools, instructional leaders, and district staff. For more information, or to review the Parent Communications and Involvement Standards, visit the Parent Communications and Involvement Workgroup web page.

Parent Fact Sheets
A fact sheet is a short document--usually one printed page--that presents a summary of information related to a given topic. Through the support of the Casey grant, there are now more than 60 topics to choose from, and most are available in both English and Spanish. Check the Fact Sheet directory to see the latest topics.

Portfolio of Parent Communications and Involvement Best Practices
The Portfolio of Parent Communications and Involvement Best Practices is being created in an effort to foster collaboration and idea sharing among educators. In January 2003, principals were surveyed for their successful parent involvement activities. These included curriculum-based events such as Science Expos and Family Literacy and Math Nights, character-building activities, safety patrols, parent volunteer programs and many others. Summaries of these activities are being compiled in the Portfolio of Parent Communications and Involvement Best Practices. The portfolio will be distributed to all schools and child development centers for the 2003-04 school year, and will also be available online. Click to see a sneak preview.

Parent Congress
Funds from the Casey grant support all four Parent Congress meetings. Principals are encouraged to select a parent whose child is currently attending their school as a delegate (and an alternate) to represent their school. The Superintendent meets with the delegates to discuss current educational topics, gather input and receive feedback. Each school's delegate works directly with the principal to ensure that other parents within their school community receive the information presented at each Parent Congress meeting. Delegates are responsible for providing a variety of ways for parents and school staff to receive the information. For more information, visit the Parent Congress web page.
