In English Language Arts, performance improved at all grade levels except Grades 2 and 11 (down 1 and 2 points, respectively).
- Notable gains at Grade 8 (up 6 points from 42 to 48), Grade 6 (up 5 points from 44 to 49) and Grade 9 (up 5 points from 45 to 50).

In Mathematics, performance improved at all grade levels except Grade 11, where it was unchanged.
- Notable gains at Grade 4 (up 5 points from 56 to 61) and Grade 8 (up 5 points from 27 to 32).

In addition fewer students scored at Below/Far Below Basic levels.
- English Language Arts: Percentage at Below/Far Below Basic decreased from 26% to 24% (-2%).
- Mathematics: Percentage at Below/Far Below Basic decreased from 38% to 35% (-3%).
- Federal No Child Left Behind Act Science: Percentage at Below/Far Below Basic decreased from 36% to 29% (-7%).
- In English Language Arts and Mathematics, higher percentages of students in all ethnic groups reached Proficient/Advanced levels.

In English Language Arts, the achievement gaps between the White subgroup and other ethnic groups remained unchanged, except for the White-Asian/Indochinese and White-Hispanic gaps, which closed slightly (-1 each). Substantial gaps remain:
- White-African American gap is 36 points
- White-Asian/Indochinese gap is 7 points
- White-Filipino gap is 7 points
- White-Hispanic gap is 40 points

In Mathematics, the achievement gaps between the White subgroup and other ethnic groups remained unchanged, except for the White-Hispanic gap, which widened slightly (+1). Substantial gaps remain:
- White-African American gap is 29 points
- White-Asian/Indochinese gap is -5 points (with Asian/Indochinese students scoring higher)
- White-Filipino gap is 6 points
- White-Hispanic gap is 27 points
- With 47% of students at Proficient/Advanced in English Language Arts, San Diego Unified out-performs California (at 46%) by 1 point; California out-gained San Diego Unified from 2007 to 2008 by 1 point (San Diego Unified up 2; California up 3).
- With 42% of students at Proficient/Advanced in Mathematics, San Diego Unified was out-performed by California (at 43%) by 1 point; San Diego Unified outgained California from 2007 to 2008 by 1 point (San Diego Unified up 3; California up 2).
- San Diego Unified students continue to take higher-level mathematics coursework than students statewide. For example, 78% of San Diego Unified Grade 8 students were enrolled in Algebra compared to 51% statewide. 42% of Grade 8 students, statewide, scored Proficient/Advanced compared to 31% in San Diego Unified. Notably, the percentage of Grade 8 students enrolled in Algebra in San Diego Unified jumped from 72% in 2007 to 78% and the percent of students at Proficient/Advanced also jumped from 28% to 31%.
