World Languages

World Language courses guide students in language acquisition and learning, providing them opportunities to develop increasing levels of language proficiency and also gain knowledge and an understanding of other cultures.

The District is committed to making language learning opportunities available across the district. World Language opportunities are provided at all levels and include:

  • Biliteracy Programs
  • Language Immersion and Dual Language programs;
  • Language Enrichment Programs,
  • World Language programs and courses.

The district currently offers world language programs and courses in nine languages:

  • American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Chinese
  • Filipino
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Latin
  • Spanish

In addition, the district credits courses offered by Independent World Language Schools in languages that include: Arabic, Hebrew, Modern Greek, Japanese, Chinese, Persian and Turkish.

The World Language Program focuses on five specific goals for language acquisition and learning:

  1. Communicate in languages other than English.
  2. Gain knowledge and an understanding of other cultures.
  3. Connect with other disciplines and acquire information.
  4. Develop insight into the nature of language and culture.
  5. Participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.
