Parents, guardians and employees are reminded that a new California law requires that students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2011-12 school year must be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap.

Although the California Legislature recently granted school districts a 30-day extension to verify immunizations, all 7th to 12th graders will be required to receive the Tdap booster. San Diego Unified students will be allowed to attend school for up to 30 calendar days after the first day of school, Sept. 6, 2011, regardless of proof of immunization or signed Tdap Personal Belief statement. These documents need to be provided to your child's school no later than Oct. 6, 2011.
Parents/guardians are encouraged to schedule their child’s immunization appointment as soon as possible. It may take more than a month to get an appointment. Personal healthcare providers, some local pharmacies and Community Health Centers offer vaccines. For a schedule of immunization clinics in San Diego County, visit www.sdiz.org.
The California Department of Public Health's website, Shots for School, provides extensive immunization information in both English and Spanish. Visit http://www.shotsforschool.org/.
