| Marian Kim-Phelps |
Marian Kim-Phelps has been a part of San Diego Unified for the past 20 years, as a teacher, vice-principal and principal in both elementary and secondary levels. She has served as a site administrator for more than 10 years, first as principal at Dailard Elementary School and most recently, as principal at Zamorano Fine Arts Academy. She has served as a mentor for new and aspiring administrators for the past seven years and has presented at numerous professional development conferences for district and community leaders.
Kim-Phelps was recently awarded the 2010 National Distinguished Principal Finalist Award for the State of California. Her accomplishments include raising Zamorano’s Academic Performance Index (API) from 740 to 835, and increasing its Similar School Ranking from a 2 to 10. Her colleagues, staff and parent community describe her as ethical, hard-working and an advocate for all children. At Zamorano, she created a collaborative culture while integrating state of the art technology with innovative research practices. A fellow principal says that she delicately balances heart and compassion, yet instills a laser like focus with systems of accountability.
She is currently working towards her doctorate degree at San Diego State University. She graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a B.A. in Psychology and a double minor in Biology and Theatre. She earned her M.A. in Educational Leadership from Point Loma Nazarene University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Prior to and during her years as an educator, she worked in hospital business administration with Scripps Health.
