Dr. Shirley Wilson has been an integral part of San Diego Unified School District senior leadership leading principals and schools to improve teaching and learning and higher student achievement. Dr. Wilson is committed to social justice and ensuring that all students receive a viable education to be college and career ready. 

Her career in education has included experiences as a classroom teacher in elementary and middle school, English Language Arts Demonstration School Coordinator, Curriculum Development and Professional Developer Resource teacher, assistant principal, elementary principal, school improvement officer, assistant area superintendent and area superintendent in San Diego Unified School District. Dr. Wilson has conducted workshops at conferences and has worked as an Ad Hoc professor at Mesa College in the Early Childhood Education Department.
As the area superintendent, Dr. Wilson is responsible for the development of the instructional leadership for principals to lead schools for academic success improving the instructional proficiency of teachers with an emphasis on data analysis to inform the instructional program to increase student achievement for all. As a result of the improved instructional leadership and improved student achievement, San Diego Unified School District was recognized by the Broad Foundation as a 2013 finalist for raising student achievement and closing the achievement gap.
During her tenure as principal of Oak Park Elementary School, the school was awarded the prestigious Title I Achieving School Award by the California Department of Education. Additionally, the statewide Academic Performance Index (API) increased 150 points at the school. As a teacher, Dr. Wilson was awarded the Coca-Cola Teacher of the Year, San Diego Unified School District’s English Department Language Arts teacher of the year, and designated a mentor teacher because of her teacher leadership, and exemplary teaching pedagogy. Dr. Wilson’s work as an exemplary educator has garnered her special recognition and commendation from Jack O’Connell California State Superintendent, SDUSD Board Trustee Shelia Jackson, and City of San Diego Council President Anthony Young.
Dr. Wilson has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Masters of Arts degree in Educational Psychology from Pepperdine University’s College of Education, and her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University. Her doctoral research was titled “Principal Preparation Programs for Effective School Leaders”.
