IB Overview


With the authorization to open an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programmed in the 2006-07 school year, Mission Bay High School revamped its magnet focus to serve students interested in a rigorous academic program to prepare them for a variety of challenging post secondary school options.
 
Situated directly along the edge of a saltwater estuary close to the Pacific Ocean and Mission Bay, Mission Bay High School offers students a unique instructional setting in the ideal location to engage in coastal and environmental studies. The MBHS Global Studies and Technology Magnet offer’s students a rigorous selection of academic coursework, featuring the International Baccalaureate Programme for all students.
 
With the 4x4 schedule, all students take four classes each quarter (two quarters in a term), for a total of sixteen semester courses each school year. This schedule allows students to choose from a rich assortment of electives to enhance the courses required for high school graduation and entrance to colleges and universities.  
 
  • All students have the opportunity to participate in the International Baccalaureate Programme, either as a full Diploma student or as a Certificate student selecting one or more IB courses.
  • All ninth grade students will take Geography 1, 2, (or equivalent.)
  • All MBHS students are required to take at a minimum two years of a world language.
  • All students (not enrolled in IB Biology) are expected to take Marine Science 1, 2, in the 11th grade, in addition to the three years of SDUSD required science for graduation (earth science, biology, and chemistry or physics.)
  • All eleventh and twelfth grade students are required to select one or more of the following Magnet pathways: 
  • An International Baccalaureate class (two-year)
  • A Career technology course:
  • ROP Printing and Graphics Technology
  • ROP Management and Ownership
  • ROP Website Design
  • ROP Business Environments
  • ROP Principles of Engineering

Club And Sports
Diverse club activities and championship athletic teams offer Mission Bay’s students outstanding opportunities to enhance their educational and personal development through leadership, teamwork and service learning.
Key Club, Interact, ASB, Link Crew, Future Teachers, AVID, and DECA are among the active groups that connect students to unique youth-oriented organizations for environmental and community service opportunities, volunteerism, and career and college preparation.
