    Keys

If the keys to your media cabinet or the drawer in the base of your year 2 Promethean board have been lost or damaged work with your principal or custodian to have them replaced.

Year 2 Netbooks in Deep Sleep

Some of the year 2 Netbooks have been experiencing “deep sleep.”  They will go to sleep and not wake up when the space bar is press or the power button is pressed.  If you are experiencing this:
    • remove the battery from the Netbook while it is in "deep sleep" to shut off the machine.
    • then with the battery off, push and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds.
    • reattach the battery and power on the netbook.

If the same netbook has that same problem of "deep sleep" again, call it in to the help desk: (619) 209-HELP.

    Reminders

    Printers

Make sure the i21 printer in your room is never turned  off or unplugged. Keep the printer plugged in and powered on at all times, even on weekends, breaks, and vacations.

    Filters - Year 1 Boards

If you are in a Year 1 room, make sure to clean the 2 filters in the projector on a regular basis.  To do this:
    • make sure the projector is off
    • remove the filters
    • walk away from the projector or outside
    • shake/blow the dust into a trashcan
Here is a link to a job aid on cleaning the filters.

    ActivInspire

Do not upgrade ActivInspire via Promethean Planet. Upgrading  district installed software on your own could render certain systems or programs incompatible or inoperable.  The district tests software to be sure that it works with district equipment and systems. The district will provide updates to district installed software.

    Email Using Outlook

Does your outlook ask you for a user ID and password? Where it asks for your user ID enter: SDCS\your ID.  Where it asks for your password enter: your password. Once you have entered this information, click on the OK button. Your email will now update in Outlook.  You will have to enter in this information every time you open the program.  This is a security measure to keep your information secure.

    Calling for Help

Do not suffer in silence. Call in your troubles, if a problem is not  reported then it can not be fixed. If you are having trouble:

    • Check with teachers at your site
    • Email your person of contact
    • Call in your trouble

Call the IT help desk for help with:

    • the teacher tablet
    • the student netbooks and netbook cart
    • the Promethean Board and wings
    • the printer
    • the document camera
The IT Help desk has a new number:  (619) 209-HELP or (619) 209-4357

Call PPO (Physical Plant Operations) for help with:

    • sound issues like buzzing or popping
    • the microphones
    • the amplifier
    • the DVD/VCR
PPO can be contacted on the web. Go to http://pposervices.sandi.net. Click on work request and follow the instructions.  For emergencies, a call can be placed to the PPO Work order desk: 858-627-7250.

Contact your BSS for help with:

    • the chair
    • the table/workstation

    Secure Passwords

Secure passwords are important for you and your students. P assword security is a part of digital citizenship.

Some things to consider regarding passwords:

    • Make sure if you write down your password you do so in a secure location.
    • Do not use the same password for all your accounts
    • Never share your password with a visiting or student teacher.
    • Teach your students to never share their passwords.
    • To help maintain the security of your students information, do not use district Active Directory passwords for accounts for your students for other services like wiki, blogs, or pearson success net.
    • When you make a new password do not include names, birthdays, phone numbers, dates, placess, addresses, your school or words

In today’s world we have many many passwords.  A good way to make a password that you can remember is by using acronyms, mnemonic devices, or substitution. An example of substitution would be take personal information, I have 2 cats, and chage that to Ih2c!! Substitute the first letter from each word to create a unique secure password.  For more information watch this short video on creating strong passwords.

    Aero Peek

Aero Peek will be turned off on the student netbook to maximize performance and increase battery life. This will be turned off by the school district. The teacher and students will not have to do anything to make this change. To see what Aero Peek is view our video podcast or see this see this de

    Promethean Board Cool Down

The Promethean Board Projector goes through a cool down procedure every time it is turned off. This is a very important cycle that cools down the bulb and maintains the bulb's longevity. Not allowing the projector to go through a complete cool down cycle could cause the projector to overheat or damage the bulb. For this reason, it is important to only turn off your board during the school day if it is going to be inactive for a period of 30 minutes or more.

Check-list for calling the IT Help Desk.

When you call the IT Help Desk it is important to have the following information at hand, especially if you need to leave a message. The more information you are able to provide, the better the Help Desk is able to help you.
    1. Your school name and room number
    2. Computer C-tag (if you are calling regarding a computer, you will need the c-tag. This can be found on the bottom of the teacher Tablet PC or the student netbook. It is on a sticker and begins with the letter C)
    3. Netbook number (if you are calling regarding a student netbook, you will need the netbook number. This can be found on a sticker on the top of the netbook. It includes your room number and the slot number that corresponds with the netbook cart).
    4. Year 1 or Year 2 room (If your Promethean board was installed last school year 2009-2010 school year, you are in a Year 1 room. If your Promethean board was installed this school year 2010-2011, you are in a Year 2 room. )
    5. Detail of your issue (The more information you are able to provide regarding your issue, the better the help desk is able to help you. For example: if you are calling regarding a netbook that a student can not login to, include the student id and the netbook number and this information in your message)

    Inspire Ticker Tape

ActivInspire allows you to create a scrolling ticker tape across your flipchart pages. Go to: Tools>More Tools>Tickertape to access the tickertape. With a tickertape you can bring items to your students' attention. Did you know you can save your tickertape and add an action button of your saved tickertapes to your page? Click on the Save as icon within the tickertape window (floppy disk and pencil icon). Ticker Tape Tip via Amy Martin's Blog on Technlogy Resource Teachers.

    Ticker Tape Lesson Ideas

    • Post objectives or standards
    • Post homework
    • Post announcements
    • Congratulate students or celebrate birthdays
    • Display a sequence of numbers for patterns
    • Post spelling words, vocabulary lists, or key words and definitions
    • Reading fluency with sight words :
Kimberly Jurczak posted Practicing Fluency with Tickertape and Dolch Sight Words in English/Language Arts on the Promethean Planet English Language Arts Community Forum.
See below for a great idea on teaching fluency with the ActivInspire tickertape and Dolch sight words! This idea was created/shared by Kristine Haller, Instructional Technology Facilitator for Broward County Public Schools.
Here is a Dolch list resource pack. Download and import into My Resources.
    Suggested activity for this:
    1. Draw a rectangle on the board
    2. Start the tickertape
    3. Students choral read as the word passes through.
    4. Increase the speed each day as the students are familiar with the words.
    Great activity to increase fluency!

  • Important I21 Year 2 Installation Information

Posted by Michael Senise at 12/6/2010 10:00:00 AM

    Hello Year 2 Teachers!

Many of you will be receiving your Promethean boards soon, if you have not already. Once the installation is complete your Principal will “sign off” on the install and will be given the keys to the storage drawer below your Promethean board  where the pens and remotes for your i21 equipment have been locked. You should have already attended the Vision/Tablet PC class and will need to attend Promethean 1 as soon as possible. In the meantime, the following instructions/job aids below will help you get started using your i21 classroom.

    1)      Connecting your Tablet to the Samsung 860 Document Camera, the Projector and the Promethean Board
Connecting your Tablet to the Samsung 850DX Document Camera, the Projector and the Promethean Board

DO NOT install the software from the CD that came with the doc cam. It WILL NOT work with Windows 7. If you would like to use the advanced features, use these directions to install the software for your doc cam:

Samsung 850DX Windows 7 Software Installation Instructions (pdf)

Installing the 860 Software for Windows 7 Instructions and SDP USB Viewer Application Overview (pdf)

    2)      Powering on the Presentation Station - Using Windows key + P (pdf)

    3)      Calibrating the Promethean Board

    4)      Step by step directions to make a simple flipchart. Or, once you have opened ActivInspire (see steps 1 and 2 of the job aid), you can use the pen tool to write.

    5)      4 minute video - Setting up the i21 Presentation Station

If you need assistance, please ask another i21 teacher at your site or contact your Ed Tech POC.

    Thanks,

    i21 Connect

    Hello i21 Teachers!

In this update from i21 Connect you will find information on starting up your netbooks in the new school year, troubleshooting Lanschool, and more. If you have a suggestion for what we could share in the next i21 Connect Update, please use http://bit.ly/beaDVm to let us know.

    Thank you,

    The Ed Tech Team

    Student Netbooks

Have you allowed your student computers to receive the beginning of the year software updates? For detailed instructions, please click on this link.

    Year 1 vs. Year 2

Many folks have been confused about their Yr. 1 or Yr. 2 status. You are considered a Year 1/Cohort 1 teacher if you were a part of the Year 1 rollout of i21. This means you taught in an i21 classroom during the 2009-2010 school year and were trained on the i21 equipment including the Promethean board and netbooks.

You are considered a Year 2/Cohort 2 teacher if you currently teach in a classroom that will be installed with i21 equipment during the current school year. You are also considered a Year 2/Cohort 2 teacher if you are new to an i21 classroom that was installed last year (ie. A Year 2 teacher in a Year 1 room). Your required trainings include the Vision/Tablet PC, Promethean 1, and Netbooks, all of which are full day classes. You should take Vision/Tablet PC as soon as possible. Year 2 teachers in a Year 2 room cannot take Promethean 1 until the Promethean board is installed. Netbook training will occur later in the year.

    Lanschool

This software enables you to see and control all of your student computers from your Tablet PC. For instance, you can freeze all netbooks when you need student attention, you can send a website out to all student computers, and you can limit what applications and websites students can use. These are the initial steps you need to know about Lanschool:

    ·  Step 1: LanSchool will be installed automatically on the teacher's Tablet PC the first time they login upon returning to the district. (There is no installation required on the student netbooks as the software was already installed.)

    ·  Step 2:  Teacher sets classroom LanSchool channel.  Click here for Job Aid for instructions.

    For troubleshooting tips, click here.

The detailed instructions for using Lanschool can be found on this link to the Lanschool Workshop. If learning on your own is not for you, you can attend our 2 hour workshop on Lanschool by registering at ero.

    Workshops

Ed Tech is offering many workshops that involve your i21 classroom. Workshops are offered for different levels and at different pacing. Some examples of classes include your doc cam, Moodle, ActivExpression (Engage), wiki, and blogging. Go to ero and sign up for classes today!

    Your Projector

Teachers are already reporting “fading” bulbs on their Promethean projectors. Save the life of your bulb and be sure to shut it off when you will not be using it for 15 minutes or more.

  • Netbook Redistribution

Posted by Michael Senise at 9/12/2010 11:00:00 AM
Questions have arisen regarding the reallocation of netbooks to i21 classrooms that are beyond the allocation ratio of 1:25 for 3rd grade and 1:34 for 6th and 9-12 grade math. Many principals have asked if netbooks from these i21 classrooms that have students under the allocation ratio may be redistributed to other i21classrooms, which are over the allocation number.
    Example:

“I have an i21 classroom for intervention math that has a maximum number of students for the day that does not exceed 27 students. The classroom was allocated 34 netbooks. Can I distribute the extra 7 netbooks to supplement i21 classrooms at my site that exceed 34?”

    Answer:

Yes. You may use the extra Netbooks that are over the maximum number used in a particular i21 classroom to supplement i21 classrooms where there is a shortage. However, for inventory purposes, at the end of the school year, these netbooks must be returned to classroom cart where they were originally assigned.  Note:  Netbooks may only be redistributed from one i21 classroom to another i21 classroom.

    Please note:

    • Netbooks must be returned to the original classroom cart at the end of the school year.
    • There can be a maximum of 38 netbooks stored in a cart due to electrical limitations. Additional netbooks beyond 38 can be stored and charged in the locked AV cabinet that was installed as part of the i21 classroom.
    • The principal must approve Netbook redistribution and principal will keep a master list. Please use the spreadsheet provided for this purpose called Netbook Redistribution Master List.  Click here to download spreadsheet.
    • The original computer label must remain on the netbook and cannot be covered over.
    • Classroom printer will need to be added on the netbook once the computer has been moved. This will have to be done by the student. Click here to view printer job aid.
    • Each computer move must be documented on the Netbook Redistribution Form and a copy must be stored in the originating room’s cart and also in the destination room’s cart. Click here for to download a copy of the Netbook Redistribution Form.

  • Student Active Directory User Names and Passwords

Posted by Michael Senise at 8/20/2010 10:00:00 PM

    i21 Connect

Based on the experience of students using Active Directory user names and passwords in the 2009 -2010 school year, we have determined that all students should use the more complex form for student passwords in order to ensure student user name and password security.  With this in mind, many of the students passwords in the district have been changed to reflect the new updated standards.  All student user names and passwords are accessible in Zangle by the classroom teacher.  Please see the link to the Job Aid below for instructions on how to access student Active Directory user names and passwords and some troubleshooting tips.

Note:  Students will need to use their Active Directory user name and password to access the following:

    • Login to the Netbooks
    • Accessing Naviance
    • Login to my.sandi.net
    • Login to Moodle
Job Aid: Job Aid for accessing student netbook Active Directory user names and passwords in Zangle

Troubleshooting Student User Names and Passwords:
The following are some scenarios that have come up regarding student user names and passwords:
    1.  Student password is missing when the report is run.
      • The student passwords are update once per hour once the student account has been made active in Zangle.  Please wait one hour and rerun the report again.  If the student password is still not there, then please call the help desk at 619-725-7500.  Please be ready to provide the following information when calling the help desk:  Student first name, last name, and student ID number.
    2. Student user names and passwords are blank on the report.
      • Please check with the Zangle Power User at your site and make sure that you are the teacher of record for your course (i.e. the main teacher who assigns grades and such).  If assigned as other than the teacher of record, the reports will be blank.  If you team teach or job share, one teacher may be listed as the teacher of record and this teacher would have to generate the reports.
      • Once you have been made the teacher of record or have ascertained your status with regard to the course, then try printing the reports again.  If the reports are still blank, please call the help desk at 619-725-7500.

Student Active Directory User Names and Passwords:

    New Software for i21

    LanSchool:
LanSchool is a new software program being added to the i21 classroom this year.   The function of the software is for remote monitoring and management of student netbooks from the teachers' Tablet PC.  Some of the most useful features include being able to see all of the student's netbook screens (see photo) right from the Tablet PC and the ability to lock student computers when full student attention is required.  The following addresses the installation and setup of LanSchool:
    • Step 1:  LanSchool will be installed automatically on the teacher's Tablet PC the first time they login upon returning to the district. (There is no installation required on the student netbooks as the software was already installed.)
    • Step 2:  Teacher sets classroom LanSchool channel.  Click here for Job Aid for instructions.
