Summertime means school is out but healthy free lunches are still available for many of San Diego's kids. San Diego Unified School District has been providing the Summer Lunch Program since 2004. Last summer, San Diego Unified's Summer programs served more than 250,000 free lunches and snacks. The program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture.
The Summer Lunch Program provides free lunches and snacks to all kids, 18 years and younger, regardless of income, at school sites and Park and Recreation sites around the San Diego Unified School District.

San Diego Unified has partnered with the City of San Diego's Park and Recreation Department since 2004. The Park and Recreation Summer Lunch Program is called "Summer Fun Café". Every Park and Recreation site also holds at least one summer BBQ to bring families and community members together.
“There’s no enrollment, no paperwork and no income qualifications,” said Gary Petill, Director of the District’s Food Services program.
“All they need to do is be at one of the locations. Just because it’s summer vacation doesn’t mean lunch is any less important.” said Petill.
Lunch dates and times vary depending on the school or Park and Recreation site schedule.
Nationwide, the
USDA’s Summer Food Service Program serves more than two million lunches every day. Lunch sites must be in areas where at least half of the local children are eligible for free or reduced price school meals.
