  • San Diego Unified is considering a proposal to change the first day of the 2016-17 school year from the Tuesday after Labor Day to the last week in August. The proposed start date is August 29, 2016 for all schools, with an end date of June 14, 2017 for traditional calendar schools and an end date of July 21, 2017 for year-round schools. To learn more, go to www.sandi.net/calendarchanges.   • City Launches Free Afterschool Homework Assistance Program for K-8 Students

    As part of Mayor Kevin Faulconer's One San Diego budget plan to reestablish the City's libraries as centers for learning and civic engagement for San Diego children, the new Do Your Homework @ the Library afterschool program provides free homework assistance to students in grades K-8 at 18 San Diego Public Library locations. Each Homework Center is staffed with professional Tutor/Learning Coordinators as well as volunteer “homework coaches” available to help students with school assignments. The Central Library’s Homework Center is open every day, and 17 additional Homework Centers are open five days a week. No registration is required.
