SAN DIEGO – Newsweek magazine’s annual list of America’s best public high schools includes 15 from the San Diego Unified School District, with one – Preuss UCSD – in the top 10, and another in the top 100, the San Diego High School for International Studies.
For the second year in a row, the pair from the San Diego Unified School District are the only campuses in San Diego County to score in the top 100. The rankings were announced in the magazine’s May 26, 2008 issue.
The schools are honored for doing the best job of preparing average students for college by offering rigorous curriculum. Scores are determined by dividing the number of Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) tests taken at a school by the number of graduating seniors. According to the magazine, there are approximately 27,000 public high schools in the United States.
The schools and their rankings (changed by Newsweek after the original annoucement when the May 26 issue was released): Preuss UCSD (6), San Diego High School for International Studies (72), La Jolla (159), University City (227), Serra (238), Mira Mesa (338), Point Loma (357), Scripps Ranch (363), Patrick Henry (366), Muir (437), San Diego School of Creative & Performing Arts (564), Madison (1062), San Diego High School of Business (1087), Mission Bay (1269), and Clairemont (1340).
