News Release:
San Diego District and Charter Schools Agree to Work Together

June 7, 2007

SAN DIEGO – The California Charter Schools Association and the San Diego Unified School District this week announced that they have committed to work together to improve student achievement for all public school students in San Diego, both in district and charter public schools.

After the association recently dropped its lawsuit against the district, both sides have mutually agreed to put the dispute behind them and to work together to develop more effective methods of implementing the provisions of Proposition 39. This law requires school districts to share public school facilities fairly among all public school students, including those attending charter schools.

Association and district representatives agreed this week
--to encourage more open communication,
--to encourage charter schools to participate in developing a streamlined process for review and renewal with the district,
--to improve the process for charter schools to request facilities,
--to consider multi-year district facilities commitments outside Proposition 39,
--to develop a model facilities use agreement, and
--to work to increase funding for all special education students and services.

The agreement comes after the California Charter Schools Association and the KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy decided not to appeal a trial court dismissal of their lawsuit against the San Diego Unified School District. Both sides have agreed not to seek recovery of legal fees or court costs.

“The dismissal of this lawsuit allows the parties to move forward more positively in their relationship, which will benefit all of San Diego’s public school students,” said Superintendent of Schools Carl A. Cohn and Association President Caprice Young, in a joint statement.

“We are looking forward to sustaining a far more positive working relationship among the school district, charter schools and the association,” they added. “We are encouraged that both exemplary district schools and exemplary charter schools are already doing an excellent job educating many students. We want that to be true for all students in San Diego.”
