SAN DIEGO – According to results released by San Diego City Schools (SDCS) today, 89.2% of high school seniors who took the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to qualify for a June graduation passed both portions of the exam. This is the first year a student must pass the exam to be eligible to graduate from high school.

“We were very pleased to learn that the district pass rate of CAHSEE closely matches the statewide pass rate of 89.3%,” said Geno Flores, deputy superintendent of San Diego City Schools. “In fact, 15 of our comprehensive high schools had pass rates above 90%. That’s wonderful news for such a large, diverse urban school district.”

Overall, more than 90% of San Diego’s seniors passed the mathematics portion of the test, and more than 91% passed the literacy portion. A complete list of cumulative exit exam pass rates for San Diego high schools is attached. “The bottom line is that CAHSEE has not had a significant effect on the percentage of students who will not graduate in June from San Diego City Schools,” Flores said. “The percentage of those not graduating is consistent with the percentage of students who would not graduate based on normal criteria. Those who are graduating have shown they have attained a level of achievement that can be documented. They deserve credit for that.”

Of the schools with the highest pass rate (98%), Mira Mesa High School had the largest number of students pass, with 512 out of 526 seniors passing both the math and English portions. Mira Mesa serves one of the most diverse school populations in the district. Principal Jeff Olivero said, “Credit for the high pass rate really goes to the teachers and counselors who have owned the students’ scores.”

“They know and support each of our students and provide so many opportunities for success,” Olivero said. “We’re still hopeful that those who haven’t passed yet will pass the May or July exams and will still graduate this year.”

Both the district and the state have identified several ways in which a senior who did not pass the CAHSEE may still earn a diploma, including the SB517 provision which addresses Special Education students. Special Education students who have met their Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals will receive a Letter of Recognition and can participate in the commencement ceremonies.
