SAN DIEGO – Five San Diego City Schools were honored by the state as Distinguished Schools, as part of the California School Recognition Program.

Twenty schools in the county were honored. District schools were: Benchley-Weinberger Elementary, Doyle Elementary, Hickman Elementary, KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy, and Silver Gate Elementary.

To be cited, schools must first qualify for the Distinguished Schools program, which considers test scores, parent participation and learning environment. About 5 percent of California's schools are so honored each year, according to the State Department of Education.

The schools will be recognized May 26 during a ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.

The California School Recognition Program is extending its year-long celebration of its 20th anniversary to elementary schools in 2006. The California School Recognition Program was created in 1985 to publicize and reinforce the priorities of the State Board of Education and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The program identifies and honors some of the state's most exemplary and inspiring public schools with the California Distinguished School Award. Although participation is voluntary, the award is highly sought after by schools in all areas of the state.
