San Diego High Teacher Stan Murphy Selected as Finalist in National Teacher of the Year Competition

San Diego High School social studies teacher Stan Murphy has been named one of four finalists for the nation's top teaching honor - National Teacher of the Year. A panel of educators, representing 14 national education organizations, chose the finalists for the 2005 teachers of the year representing the U.S. states, territories, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education Activity. The panel will also select the 2005 National Teacher of the Year. All of the candidates will be honored at the White House as part of the April ceremony and announcement. Former SDCS teacher Jan Gabay, who taught English at Serra High School, was named National Teacher of the Year in 1990.

Murphy was named one of three San Diego City Schools Teachers of the Year last May, along with De Portola Middle School teacher Sheila Weiner and McKinley Elementary School teacher Mike Miller. He went on to win as one of four San Diego County Teachers of the Year on October 8, 2004, chosen from a field of 38 nominees representing 27 county school districts. In November 2004, he was named one of five California Teachers of the Year.

The district is currently accepting applications from nominated School Site Teachers of the Year. The deadline for nominated teachers (one per site) to submit applications is Friday, February 4, 2005. All nominated teachers will be recognized on May 10, 2005, when the district winners will be announced.Further information is included in Administrative Circular 47, which includes attachments for the Nomination Form and Application.
