Leslie Fausset Named Interim Superintendent Board Plans for Smooth Transition During Search for Bersin Replacement May 2 , 2005 SAN DIEGO - The San Diego City Schools Board of Education has extended an offer to Leslie Fausset to become interim superintendent, which was accepted. Fausset, who currently serves as deputy superintendent, will begin July 1, 2005, the day after current Superintendent Alan Bersin's contract ends. The board hopes to have a permanent superintendent in place by the beginning of the 2005-06 school year. Fausset's existing contract essentially will remain the same. Two modifications include the inclusion of a three-month notification clause for either party and a one-time payment of $20,000 by June 30, 2005. Fausset joined the district in February 2004 as chief of staff. She was promoted to deputy superintendent in June. Prior to joining the district, Fausset was most recently the Chief Deputy Superintendent for Policy and Programs for the California Department of Education (CDE), where she was responsible for managing and coordinating the functions of the Communications Office, Child, Youth and Family Services Branch; Curriculum and Instructional Leadership; and Education Equity, Access, and Support Branch. Prior to her role with the CDE, Fausset served as Area Superintendent, Learning Support Services, for the Poway Unified School District. With more than 30 years in education, Fausset, who holds teaching and administrative credentials, has held numerous positions in the Poway Unified School District, including principal and teaching positions. Serving nearly 136,000 students, San Diego City Schools is the second largest school district in California, with 202 educational facilities and more than 14,500 full-time equivalent positions (representing more than 15,800 employees). SDCS is improving student achievement by focusing on challenging instruction in reading, writing and mathematics in pre-kindergarten through Grade 12. The district is committed to supporting schools and enhancing the classroom learning environment through modernized facilities and resources and through parent, teacher and community involvement in the educational process.
