Superintendent Alan Bersin Named CA Secretary for Education Message to Staff April 29, 2005 Dear Colleagues: I wanted to inform you directly that Governor Schwarzenegger this morning has appointed me to serve in his cabinet as Secretary for Education as of July 1, 2005. In addition, at the same time, I will be honored to become a member of the State Board of Education. The Governor's announcement to this effect is attached for your review. The Governor's decision reflects favorably on our work together during the past seven years in San Diego City Schools. We have learned through our experience how challenging our mission is to work deeply to improve student achievement for all of our children. To hold ourselves responsible and accountable for improved instruction as we hold all children to high expectations for their learning is a lesson San Diego offers our colleagues across California. I take this opportunity once again to express my continuous gratitude for your commitment and public service and my unreserved appreciation and admiration of the quality efforts our teachers and staff have exerted in support of our students and their improved achievement. This is a time of transforming challenge for public education in California and throughout the nation. It is a time when our dedication in meeting the educational needs of children and finding common ground across differences of opinion will be sorely tested. I take up this new opportunity fortified by what you have taught me and what we have learned together. I thank you with all of my heart. For our students, Alan D.
