A Letter from Superintendent Cohn to Employees
September 20, 2007
Dear Colleagues of the San Diego Unified School District,
As many of you know, I tendered my resignation on September 19. After much reflection, I have decided to leave the district,
effective December 31, 2007.
It has been a privilege and honor to work here with thousands of wonderful people who are deeply committed to the education of
all students. I’m especially pleased that we’ve been able to slow the decline in enrollment two years in a row, lead the
state’s large urban districts in meeting AYP targets under No Child Left Behind and provide exemplary customer service
through our Family Friendly Schools initiative.
The leadership team will continue to focus on doing what’s best for kids through collaboration, respect and hard work. I
believe that San Diego Unified School District is well on its way to Becoming America’s Best large urban school district.
I have often said that I “flunked” retirement the first time. I’m looking forward to “getting retirement right” this time in
Kensington, a neighborhood that my wife and I have come to thoroughly enjoy.
Again, thank you for allowing me to serve as your superintendent and for your contributions to making San Diego a better place
for families and children to live, work and learn.
Sincerely,
Carl A. Cohn
Superintendent of Schools
