Support Our Troops Means Supporting Their Kids In Our Schools
May 18, 2007
A postcard-writing campaign, art contest and the chance to show off your patriotic colors are district-wide activities marking
“Support Our Troops Week,” May 21-25.
Honoring troops overseas, the many military families in the San Diego Unified School District, and our employees who are veterans, the event is being sponsored by the Xerox Corporation. The recognition is intended not only for enlisted men and women around the world – it’s also about their children – our students - in our schools.
“You’re acknowledging the sacrifices our children endure,” said Barbara Shorbill, who with her husband, a Marine, are parents of two children at Mason School. “On Support our Troops Day, on May 22, our children can stand tall and feel proud, knowing that their teachers and classmates are there for them.”
The “big event” of the week is the postcard-writing effort, with the goal of having one postcard for every student in the district sent to a member of America’s military. Teachers are being encouraged to set aside a little time to allow their students to write a personal message to a member of the military.
Veterans are encouraged to wear their old uniforms on “Show Your Support Day,” May 22. Also on May 22, winners of the student art contest will be announced at the Board of Education meeting. Those who didn’t serve in the military are encouraged to wear patriotic colors that day.
“We’re asking district employees, students – everyone – to wear red, white and blue on May 22,” said Dorothy Harper, the Associate Superintendent for Parent, Student and Community Engagement.
