SUMMER SCHOOL CLASSES OFFERED TO ALL ENGLISH LEARNERS IN SAN DIEGO CITY SCHOOLS News Release for May 18, 2001 from San Diego City Schools All 39,000 English learners in San Diego City Schools, grades K-12, are being offered a chance to attend summer school and boost their English language and literacy development under a $10 million state grant received to improve achievement in the district. The district will provide reading and writing instruction at all grade levels to English learners for the first time, no matter whether their level of English proficiency is above, below or at the level considered appropriate for the number of years the students have learned the language. Parents are urged to have their children take advantage of the classes, which will be offered at all schools where five- and six-week summer sessions will be held. The additional study will extend and enrich the English fluency of the students. At many grades, there will be reduced class size ratios of 20:1 and additional materials and professional development for teachers in using the best techniques for maximizing achievement. Parents should contact the principal of the school where their children currently attend for information on summer school enrollment. |
