San Diego City Schools Embarking on Ambitious Proposition MM 2001 Work ScheduleNews Release for May 15, 2001 San Diego City School’s plan to substantially increase the number of schools receiving Proposition MM improvements in 2001 has been put into motion. The 2001 work schedule for modernization and expansion projects calls for approximately $220 million worth of work to begin at nearly 75 sites this year. Some 40 of the 75 projects will be completed ahead of schedule per the June 2000 Board Approved Plan. Additional trade-specific jobs totaling $20 million will also be done at some 100 locations. Over 15 contracts have been awarded nearing a total of $18.5 million of work at our neighborhood schools. "This aggressive schedule makes significant progress toward fulfilling the requirements of Proposition MM," said Lou Smith, Chief Operating Officer, Facilities Management. "My goal was to get the program running four times faster than we were last summer, and this schedule will meet that goal." Among the contracts already awarded this year are projects at Angier Elementary, Logan Elementary, Webster Elementary, Madison High School, Dana School, Birney Elementary, Keiller Middle, Tubman Village Charter School, Hardy Elementary, Sequoia Elementary, Zamorano Elementary, and Horton Elementary. Also included in this first batch of contracts are two lunch court shelter packages and the construction of Ellen Browning Scripps Modular School. The complete 2001 work schedule can be found at www.sandi.net/propmm. Proposition MM provides $1.51 billion toward $4 billion worth of needed repairs and upgrades. Approximately $1 billion is designated for Major Repair & Replacement and approximately $.5 billion funds the construction of new schools. Proposition MM funds are being used to address the most critical facility needs at more than 200 sites (schools, child development centers and program facilities). Thirteen new schools will be built and three existing schools will be rebuilt. To date, thirty-one sites (25 schools, five child development centers and one program facility) have had major repairs and upgrades.
