May 20, 1999FRESNO SCHOOL DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR TO HEAD SAN DIEGO CITY SCHOOLS’ HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT Deberie Lynn Gomez, 51, the associate superintendent for the Division of Human Resources with Fresno Unified School District, has been named deputy administrative officer for human resource services with San Diego City Schools. The appointment is effective July 1.
San Diego City Schools is the eighth largest urban school district in the nation with more than 16,000 employees.
"We are pleased that a personnel administrator with Dr. Gomez’s impressive school district background will oversee our Human Resource Services division," said Superintendent of Public Education Alan Bersin.
With Fresno Unified School District since 1991, Gomez advised the Board of Education in two national searches for a superintendent, negotiated collective bargaining contracts with teacher and classified bargaining units, and was chosen as Human Resources 1997 Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators.
Prior to joining the Fresno district, Gomez was director of Human Resources for Campbell Union High School District. Prior to that, she served in several positions with the 14,000-employee Dallas Independent School District. As the assistant superintendent for personnel services in Dallas, she developed and implemented the district’s first overall
management, accountability and accreditation system and the first five-year Accreditation Plan for Texas Education Agency accreditation. She also reorganized, re-staffed, and automated the personnel department.
Gomez received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia; a Certificate Deuxieme Annee from the University of Geneva, Switzerland; a Master of Arts degree from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas; and a Doctor of Philosophy:Psychology from the University of Texas, Austin.
