RE: EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY FAIR DRAWS 2,500 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Mix 2,500 San Diego County high school students with dozens of area scientists, engineers and representatives from high-tech industries and what do you get?

The first San Diego County Educational Technology Fair, to be held Jan. 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Bing Crosby Hall at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Students will be able to take "virtual field trips" via videoteleconferencing, "fly" an unmanned aerial vehicle computerized flight simulator, see the latest in liquid breathing and blood substitute products and learn about the design and manufacture of precision and laser optics.

The technology fair is sponsored by the San Diego Science Alliance, San Diego City Schools, the County Office of Education, San Diego Science Educators Association and all five San Diego County congressmen. It is patterned after the Education High Technology Symposium sponsored by Cong. Randy Cunningham and held at Scripps Ranch High School the past several years.

Local businesses and organizations have donated funds to provide bus transportation for students to attend the event.

Interactive displays are planned by approximately 50 high technology, biomedical and other science-related businesses and organizations from throughout San Diego County, according to Barbara Abelin, event chair.

The purpose of the fair is to stimulate students¹ curiosity and interest in science and engineering by introducing them to hands-on displays and presentations. Students and their accompanying teachers also will have the opportunity to talk to leading scientists from the area as well as engineers and business representatives involved in new product development in San Diego.

Editors Note: The media is invited to attend the pre-fair introductory activities beginning at 8:30 a.m. The five area congressmen will be in attendance, along with representatives of the sponsoring agencies. Additional information is available from Abelin at Cubic Corp., 505-2248, or Patricia Winter at General Atomics, 455-3335.
