RE: SCHOOL BOARD TO DISCUSS AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND COLLABORATION WITH CITY OF SAN DIEGO
The Board of Education will discuss after school programs that include academic tutorials as well as recreation activities during its regular meeting Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. in the auditorium at the Education Center, 4100 Normal St.
The board will consider forming an alliance with the City of San Diego and other stakeholders to upgrade the quality and increase the scope of existing programs offered during hours when most parents are working. A task force of city and school district staff, along with parents, teachers, principals, nonprofit providers and potential funders, will be needed to plan program content, supervision, operating structure and costs.
The board has invited Mayor Susan Golding to attend and present recommendations from her Safe Schools Task Force. That group has focused for the past three years on making school campuses and surrounding neighborhoods safe places for students to learn and residents to live.
