RE: SAN DIEGO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS COOKING THEIR WAY AROUND THE WORLD!

First and second grade students from three classrooms at Jackson Elementary are cooking foods from around the world as they study the different continents, thanks to a grant from the Greater San Diego Industry-Education Council. Twelve to fifteen children each day get to make and eat the weekly recipe. They have started with North America, making recipes from Native Americans, and are moving into Mexico. This week, the featured recipe is Chocolate Caliente, a Mexican-style hot chocolate. Other student-tested and approved recipes have included Fry Bread and Wojabi (Indian jelly). Next week, Quesadillas! The grant provides for appliances and some utensils, but teachers are paying for the ingredients on their own.

The cooking project allows children to incorporate various areas of learning, from science to math to reading, as they learn about cooking, measuring and following a recipe. The recipes will change as they study different continents from around the world. Next month, Europe!

In addition to preparing and sampling the recipes, the students are also responsible for writing and illustrating their recipes, as you can see from the attached example.
