RE: BOARD SELECTS 4 SAN DIEGANS
TO HELP WITH SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH
Four prominent San Diego leaders will join Richard A. Collato to form the committee that will lead the search for the next superintendent of San Diego City Schools.
Collato, the president and chief executive officer of the YMCA of San Diego County, was named chair of the committee by the Board of Education last July. The four leaders joining him are Malin Burnham, chairman of the board of John Burnham and Co.; Dr. Alice B. Hayes, president of the University of San Diego; William Jones, former San Diego City Council member and president and CEO of CityLink Investment Corp., and Dr. Ralph Ocampo, immediate past president of the California Medical Association and local physician and surgeon.
Announcement of the appointments was made at the Board of Education's regular meeting today.
The five will serve as the Superintendent Search Committee to oversee the search for the new superintendent. The committee will work closely with Dr. Ira Krinsky, managing vice president of Korn/Ferry International, which was selected by the Board of Education earlier this month as the recruitment firm that will conduct a nationwide search for the successor to Dr. Bertha Pendleton, who will retire in June.
"I am very pleased that these four distinguished leaders of our community have agreed to work with Mr. Collato on this important task," Ron Ottinger, Board of Education president, said in announcing the appointment. "Their involvement signals to the entire community the priority they place on education and the importance of finding the best superintendent to lead our school district in our continuing effort to improve student achievement."
A larger committee called the Citizens Committee to Profile the Next Century Superintendent will be appointed soon, Ottinger said today. This larger group, also chaired by Collato, will develop a profile of skills and vision the next superintendent should possess based on input from leaders in education, business, government, higher education, the nonprofit sector and community organizations. Parents and community residents also will have opportunities to express their views.
The work of the Citizens Profile Committee will be given to the Superintendent Search Committee and the search firm to assist in assuring the candidates for the position possess the profile and characteristics deemed important to lead the San Diego Unified School District, which is the eighth largest urban school district in the country.
"I have a great deal of respect for all of the members of the search committee," Collato said. "They are leaders in their individual fields as well as in the community and represent the diversity of this school district. I am proud to serve with them."
