RE: WORK PERMITS FOR MINORS
Working minors and their employers are reminded this week of the state law regarding work permits for employed youth under 18 years of age.
The law requires work permits for all employed minors under 18 years of age. The minor is responsible for securing the permit and the employer is required to terminate the employment of any minor for whom he does not have an active permit or for whom an application for a permit has not been made.
Exceptions are minors who have graduated from high school or have passed the California High School Proficiency Examination. These minors may give a copy of their high school diploma or a copy of their California Proficiency Exam certificate to their employer in lieu of a work permit. Minors under the age of 18 who have not graduated from high school or passed the proficiency exam must be enrolled in school in order to have an application for work permit processed.
All current work permits automatically expire following the reopening of school. The expiration date in indicated on all "Permits to Employ and Work."
Students may obtain application forms for work permits at their schools; at Career Development Services, Revere Center, 6735 Gifford Way, Room 2, San Diego; at the Grossmont Union High School ROP/Vocational Education Center, 181 Fletcher Parkway, El Cajon, and at the Sweetwater School-to-Career Office, 1355 Second Ave., Trailer 6, Chula Vista.
Information regarding work permits and matters pertaining to child labor laws may be obtained by calling 627-7355 (City Schools); 579-4765 (Grossmont), or 691-5575 (Sweetwater Union High School District).
