No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Supplemental Educational Services (SES)
 |
|
 |
|
Overview
The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act was created to ensure that every child receives
the academic attention he or she deserves, and that no child is left behind
his or her peers. One of the most beneficial aspects of NCLB is the Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program, which provides
free tutoring to children who require special assistance to succeed in school.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
| Q: |
What is the SES program? |
| A: |
The SES program offers free tutoring to all children
who qualify. Tutoring includes individual attention outside of regular school hours and can be an invaluable resource for a
child's overall academic achievement. It can help your child perform better in subjects that he or she finds difficult, while
also improving achievement in subjects he or she finds more enjoyable. |
| Q: |
How do I determine whether or not my child qualifies for free tutoring? |
| A: |
Your child is eligible if he or she attends a
school that has been categorized as a Program Improvement School for two or more years. This categorization is based on the
performance on annual standardized tests of all the students who attend your childs school, not your child's individual
performance. |
| Q: |
Is the tutoring really free? |
| A: |
The SES program is a part of the NCLB Act, and is
funded by the federal government. There is no cost to you. Federal funds that pay providers for their tutoring services are
limited. If the requests for free tutoring exceed available funding, priority is given to the lowest-performing students who
qualify for free and reduced price meals. |
| Q: |
How do I find the best tutoring program for my child? |
| A: |
The NCLB SES Free Tutoring booklet provides detailed
information on all approved tutoring organizations available to your child. The tutoring programs outlined in this booklet
have fulfilled various standards, requirements, and approval by the State of California and have agreed to tutor district
students. As a parent/guardian, you can review and compare the descriptions of each provider to determine which offers
the best services to meet your child's needs. You will be asked to select your three top choices on the NCLB SES Application.
To receive free tutoring from the NCLB SES program, you must select a tutoring organization from the list provided in the NCLB
SES Booklet. |
| Q: |
How will I know if the provider I select is effective? |
| A: |
The tutoring companies were required to give the
California Department of Education proof of their qualifications and effectiveness when they applied to become SES providers.
For more information about a provider's qualifications and effectiveness, contact the provider at the number listed in the NCLB
SES booklet. |
| Q: |
When can my child be tutored? |
| A: |
Each tutoring program provides services on varying
schedules, but all tutoring takes place outside of the regular school day. Tutoring sessions can be after school or on the
weekends, depending on your choice of provider. There are 36 providers outlined in the NCLB SES booklet from which to select
a program that best fits your child's needs and your family's schedule. |
| Q: |
Where and when does the tutoring take place? |
| A: |
Depending on which provider you select, tutoring can
take place at your home, your child's school site, a community location (i.e., a library), the provider's location, or online.
Each provider is different. Be sure to check the location of the program when you select your top three providers to ensure that
the location is convenient to you and that your child can participate in all tutoring sessions. |
| Q: |
Does my child have to participate in the free tutoring program? |
| A: |
No. There is no obligation to participate in the NCLB
SES program. The program is designed to help your child excel in school no matter what his or her current level of study.
Participation is greatly encouraged, but not mandatory. |
| Q: |
How do I apply to have my child particpate? |
| A: |
1) Obtain an Application form.
2) Complete the application and indicate your interest in having your child receive free tutoring services through the SES program.
3) Indicate your top three choices of providers after carefully reviewing all information in the NCLB SES Booklet.
4) Sign the application.
5) Return the completed application in an envelope. The application must be postmarked by Tuesday, September 30, 2008.
|
| Q: |
I lost the envelope included with the NCLB SES booklet. Where do I deliver or mail the application? |
| A: |
Deliver or mail the application by the deadline to:
San Diego Unified School District
4100 Normal St., Room 2153
San Diego, CA 92103. |
