PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

TOPIC: Science Fair Projects are experiments you perform based upon scientific research and testing. Any topic that is interesting to you is worth exploring! If you have a question about your topic, check with your teacher. Some places to find ideas for projects are listed at the end of this packet.

PROCEDURE: THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD. The steps are:

bullet

Come up with a question in your mind about something that you can test by doing an experiment.

bullet

Read/research your topic (all projects will be required to have at least 5 references, so he sure to write down your sources).

bullet

Make a guess, called a hypothesis, about what you think your testing will show.

bullet

Make a list of the materials you will need.

bullet

Decide on your procedure or method for testing, and write it down.

bullet

Do your testing. The more samples tested or the more repetitions done on the test, the better.

bullet

Write down your date or observations. If you think graphs or charts will help others to understand your results, make them!

bullet

Come to a conclusion about what your results showed. Did you prove your hypothesis was correct, or did you prove it to he incorrect?

bullet

All during your project keep a journal or log that shows the days you worked on your project, and what you did.

DISPLAY

Prepare a display of your project. The display board should be a 3- sided backboard (available commercially as 'presentation boards," at office supply and craft stores). Each section should be no bigger than 2Ox3O inches. You can hand-write your pages or use a computer. Neatness counts, Please keep in mind teachers and judges are looking for displays that are done neatly by children, not done perfectly by parents!

bullet

The center panel should contain the title of your project and any visual materials (photos, drawings, graphs, or charts).

bulletThe side panels should have all of the supporting information – questions, , hypothesis, materials, method, results, conclusion, references, and any other visual materials.
