Overview
The primary goals of the Library Services to Schools are to:
  • Provide professional services, resources, and instructional leadership in support of student performance.
  • Assist students, staff, parents, and community members to become effective users of library resources and technology in the ever-changing learning community.
  • Ensure that students become effective users of ideas and information as well as develop abilities that will allow them to solve problems and become independent, ethical, lifelong learners.

Book Awards & Programs
  • California Young Reader Medal
    The California Young Reader Medal program gives young readers in our state the opportunity to honor their favorite books and authors, recommend them to others, and enjoy recreational reading.
  • Newbery Award
    The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year.
  • Caldecott Award
    The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
  • Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)
    Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most. Currently, 64 schools in the district participate.
  • Coretta Scott King Award
    Recipients are authors and illustrators of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream."

Instructional Media Center
The Instructional Media Center (IMC) provides multimedia instructional materials, elementary curriculum library print materials, and a teachers' media center for the instructional program of San Diego Unified School District. The IMC also provides lists of books recommended for purchase for grades K-8.
