Program Overview

To support teacher training and to help staff critical academic areas of need, the San Diego Unified School District established the General Education Teacher Intern Program.  The program provides an alternative training for those individuals seeking a Single Subject teaching credential.  Intern candidates are assigned to classrooms in large urban schools throughout  the district.

Prior to placement in urban schools throughout the district, candidates complete  preservice orientation and are assigned a support provider who mentors, coaches, and models pedagogical instruction during the two year program.

At the completion of the two year program, candidates qualify and are recommended for a preliminary Multiple or Single Subject teaching credential granted by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

The Elementary Bilingual Teaching Fellows program is suspended. No multiple subject applications will be accepted.
The California budget crisis has changed the landscape of hiring for the 2008-2009 school year. As a result, the district does not anticipate the need to hire additional multiple subject bilingual teachers. A new cohort of interns will not begin this Spring.
