From automobiles to lasers to zippers, from the time the first person picked up a rock to use a as a hammer or a stick to draw in the sand, people have been inventing and designing new things to make their lives more comfortable, stimulating, and efficient. The Invention and Design Educational Academy (IDEA) provides students personalized opportunities to explore their community, country, and world, as well as their own lives as shaped by new inventions and technology.

Students are provided with multiple experiences working with real-world and inquiry-oriented projects in all core classes and electives. During each project, students are asked to evaluate the design process as well as the finished product. IDEA is committed to prepare students for their futures in an atmosphere based on respect, responsibility, and relationships.

The school emphasizes inquiry teaching and learning so that students will have the opportunity to collaboratively and independently create meaningful work and explore the role and process of invention in our society. The Invention and Design Educational Academy includes several unique features:

Students are presented with meaningful, in depth projects, in all subject areas
Students learn to set goals and targets for projects, manage time, and secure resources
Students have the opportunity to take electives in pre-engineering.
School culture fosters inquiry-based instruction and evaluation
Junior house focuses on essential reading, writing and math skills in all subject areas.
Senior house focuses on internships and community service.
Advisory program modeled after Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
Teacher professional development and collaboration is emphasized and planned for in the master schedule

The school has four strategic goals:

All students are expected to graduate ready to attend a four-year university, with a-g requirements met. All students know what they need to do to prepare for post-secondary education and have a plan in place to get there.
Prepare students to be responsible citizens and contributing members of society.
Students develop skills to design, plan, and successfully complete rigorous standards-based projects in all subject areas.
Each student is important and receives the personalized attention needed to succeed
