High School Renewal
Community Engagement
The community engagement model focuses on retaining neighborhood students and improving outreach efforts to students, families and the local school community.
Goals are to:
- Engage the broader community for each school in their cluster or feeder pattern.
- Mobilize parents and community to support the entire K-12 community of schools.
- Promote the involvement of parents of children participating in the Voluntary Ethnic Enrollment Program (VEEP).
High schools using this model include:
- Clairemont High
- Madison High
- Mission Bay High
These schools share the belief that each and every student can achieve at high levels in a challenging academic environment. Each school's High School Renewal design team is developing long-range plans that will utilize a schoolwide Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) approach to increase student learning and performance. The AVID program has been proven highly effective in enhancing student success by honing students' writing, reading, inquiry, and collaboration skills. AVID teaching strategies are applied across content and grade levels. Students electing to participate in an AVID elective course receive additional structured support during the regular school day.
Community Engagement schools partner with the San Diego AVID Center (covering the Region IX area of San Diego, Orange and Imperial counties) to develop and implement their school reform strategies.
