San Diego Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical High School Modeled after the successful Providence, Rhode Island Met, the new San Diego Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical High School, also known as the San Diego Met, was approved 5-0 by the Board of Education at its March 2, 2004 meeting (item E.6.b.). It is being developed in partnership with The Big Picture, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to education reform. The mission of the San Diego Met is to prepare one student at a time for college and the workforce through active learning, challenging or rigorous academics and extensive community involvement and support. The key academic performance initiatives will include: Communication Building upon students' skills and expanding expertise in the areas of reading, writing, computers and multimedia, speaking, listening, foreign language, and creative expression. Empirical Reasoning Building upon students' skills and expanding expertise in the areas of logic, researching, and developing strategies to test ideas and enhance analytical thinking skills. Personal Qualities Building upon students' skills and expanding expertise in the areas of respect, responsibility, leadership, organization, physical fitness, perseverance, and self-awareness. Quantitative Reasoning Building upon students' skills and expanding expertise in the areas of algebra, statistics, geometry, basic operations, tables and graphs, and estimating and number sense. Social Reasoning Building upon students' skills and expanding expertise in the areas of citizenship, understanding diverse perspectives, cooperation, conflict resolution, and past experiences and history. The San Diego Met's academic program will meet all district graduation requirements, state academic standards, and "a-g" course requirements for both the California State and University of California systems, and will prepare students to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). The San Diego Met will be located on the Mesa College campus, taking advantage of invaluable access and resources at the community college level. Students will also work alongside mentors in the workplace and will be provided opportunities for internships and job shadows.
