HEARST HAPPENINGS
December 2008

Dear Hearst Families,

FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

Greetings Hearst Families,

As the season changes we notice, autumn leaves falling on the ground, the weather a little cooler and the sun setting earlier.  We know Winter Break is approaching soon and we will be spending time with our love ones and enjoying special meals together.  Some of you will have visitors from out- of-town and will watch home videos and turn pages of your favorite photo album viewing family photos, remembering the past and looking forward to the future.

I am blessed to be here at Hearst and have enjoyed the warm welcome I have received. We also have a new addition to our Hearst family. I am pleased to welcome Kersten Castognola, our new librarian. She has a lot of good  ideas to help make our library a more efficient and enjoyable place for kids.

Our jog-a-thon was a huge success thanks to Jon Edelbrock and all of you that helped out. We will announce the winners soon. Remember our goal is to have every child bring in $60.00.

I want to thank Keith Jacobson for installing speakers on our playground so that we can all hear the morning message. I also want to thank Janet Arkin and  Debbie Markel for coming in over the Thanksgiving break and helping out with some “Spring Cleaning”. We are so fortunate to have such dedicated family members here at Hearst.

I would like to wish you and your family a warm, safe and prosperous holiday season.  May you celebrate the holidays  in peace, joy, and good cheer, and may the gift of friendship and love help you plan for a happy healthy new year.

 Jamie Jorgensen – Principal

P.S. Remember to pickup your students at 12:15 next week. Monday-Friday we’ll be holding Parent/Teacher Conferences and ALL 5 days will be minimum days.

PTA News

Jog-a-thon – What a great day.  It was so much fun to see all of the kids so excited and what a treat to have teacher and principal participation too.  Don’t forget to turn in your money by December 5, 2008.  You could win one of the many  prizes!!

Thanks to Jon and Danica Edelbrock and all of the many volunteers who helped make this event a true success.  Hopefully we jogged our way to our $25,000 goal.

December's PTA meeting has been officially changed to Monday, December 8th at 6:30pm in our auditorium.  We thought it would be more beneficial to move the meeting one week later.  I hope we will see you there.

Book Fair – The Scholastic Book Fair is taking place now, from December 1 - 5 in the school library, hours will be from 7:30am to 4pm.  We have some fun events scheduled for the whole family including Pajama Night tonight, Wednesday.  Stay tuned for more information.

GATE  Information

Having a child that is gifted or a high-achiever can be challenging for parents. The GATE office has provided a series of learning
opportunities for parents and teachers  called the, "Distinguished Lecture Series." In these series, topics of interest are looked at from many perspectives. If you are interested in attending, please contact Steve Guadarrama, GATE team leader at Hearst @ jguadarrama@sandi.net .
Topics include: "Parenting the Gifted Brain" and "Becoming Part of the Solution."

K-Kids News

Need to get rid of toys that aren’t’ being used. Well, have I got a solution for you. Hearst students will be collecting USED toys for the needy children in Tijuana through Project Mercy. Please bring gently used toys to the office for collection anytime BEFORE December 17th.

Kiwanis / Parent Volunteers

November’s Kiwanis Student of the Month was Brianna Pinto.  Brianna was honored for being an outstanding role model here at Hearst Elementary.  She was selected from among her peers to represent the students as President of the Student Council.  Her example of being a responsible, motivated student will strengthen our students and inspire them to do their personal best.  Her willingness to contribute to the world around her by stepping into the role of student council president along with the responsibilities of being a top student in her class displays the noteworthy character that Brianna is building at such a young age.

This months Classroom Parent Volunteer of the Month was Marsha Gygax.  Mrs. Kirkness summarized her as a do-it-all sort of mom always helping out in the classroom.  A few ways that she supports our students:  organizes book orders, corrects student Math homework, contacts other parents through the classroom email list, volunteers in the classroom and brings in goodies for celebrations.  Mrs. Gygax is her go-to mom.  She is reliable and friendly - and devoted to her child's school.  We're lucky to have her as a parent volunteer.

This months Campus Parent Volunteer of the Month was Lydia Krasner.  Lydia’s dedication to make the Fall Festival a fun and exciting event for students and parents alike was greatly appreciated.  The tasks to accomplish this feat were numerous and she handled them all with the care and poise of a parent that desires the best in a school environment and extra-curricular activities.  It is parents like Lydia that make Hearst Elementary the wonderful school that it is.

Campus Gardens

 SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1Hearst Gardens

We waited, and waited, then waited some more, for our weather to cool down enough for the kindergarten students to plant their winter veggie crops.  Finally, the week before Thanksgiving break, each of our youngest students planted a seedling.  This year’s crop consists of: cabbage, celery, bok choy (cabbage), lettuce, peas, turnips and strawberries.
Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped our planting event go so smoothly.  The students took the task very seriously and cannot wait to see their fruits and vegetables grow!

We are glad to see our students, families and staff enjoying the hummingbird/butterfly garden.  As we approach winter, you may see new species of winged friends visiting our gardens, so stop by often.  Take a few moments to walk through the garden with your child and observe all of the different life forms.  Besides hummingbirds and butterflies, you can see spiders, lizards, ladybugs, spittlebugs, grasshoppers, earthworms, rabbits, etc.  Can you find something new?  Also, if you take a closer look at the soil in open areas, you may see seeds and bulbs sprouting through the soil.

Thank you for taking care of our garden by staying on the paths, and looking but not handling caterpillars and
butterflies.

As we expand our gardening centers on campus, we will need more parent volunteers.  You can get involved in planning new gardens, helping care for existing gardens, plant, water, lay mulch, prune, etc.  You don’t need to know a thing about gardening.  We are especially in need of helpers for the kindergarten and second grade gardens.  Please email
Sue Thomas at:
susanthom1@cox.net if you can help outThank you!

Music Notes

Hearst Chorus on KUSI Channel 9  - 4th and 5th grade chorus are singing on TV in the KUSI Songs of the Holidays  event.  They record 3 songs on December 4th and will be on TV sometime 12/24 and 25.  As soon as I know the time I'll let everyone know.  They can also be heard on the KUSI website once all the schools record their songs.

NO 4th/5th Grade Music classes Dec. 12, 16 & 19th  due to conferences and OCILE week.

Hearst Winter Concert - Come hear your kids sing! The time is nigh....mark those calendars now, our kids singing will be such a delight. Come listen and share, all grades will be there, at Lewis - December 10th at night. Invite relatives and neighbors to join us in song about winter and holiday joys. We'll sing about candles, we'll sing about peace and what it means to the girls and boys. Dec 10th 6:45pm, Lewis Auditorium 5170 Greenbrier.
Staggered arrival: 4/5 chorus 6 - 6:15,  2/3 6:15 - 6:30; These kids have designated seats in the front of the auditorium.
Grades 2/3 should stay with parents until they hear the "secret signal" and then proceed to the lobby in preparation for taking the stage. When they finish on stage they will sit in the designated seats.  K/1 - kids sit with parents...please be seated and ready to listen by 6:45.

Attire for children is "dress-up" clothes.  The 4/5 chorus will wear their new shirts purchased for the KUSI event.

I still need additional help getting all the kids on and off stage as well as parents willing to sit with the  2/3 grade after they leave the stage....had a nice response from Kindergarten, 4th and 5th grade parents...but need more help for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade.  Please leave your name, phone, and email in the front office if you can help and I will contact you.

Thanks so much.....Mrs. Slavik, Music Teacher

Thought for the Month

Character is ultimately who we are expressed in action, in how we live, in what we do, and so the children around us know: they
absorb and take stock of what they observe, namely us, -- we adults living and doing things in a certain spirit, getting on with one
another in various ways. Our children add up, imitate, file away what they’ve observed and so very often later fall in line with the
particular moral counsel we wittingly or quite unselfconsciously have offered them.
