Optional and Overflow Areas

District-run school options for areas served by charter schools

Optional Attendance Areas

Certain areas of the San Diego Unified School District have been designated Optional Areas.  If you reside in one of these areas, you will have a choice of two (or more) schools to attend.  Once a choice is made, however, the school of choice remains the school of attendance for the duration of the student's attendance at that level (elementary, middle/junior high or senior high).

Optional Areas are shown in the School Site Boundary Lookup as a two (or more) school-name abbreviation.  For a complete list of the abbreviations used, and their meaning, click here.  For some FAQs on Optional Areas, click here.

Bused (or Overflow) Attendance Areas

Certain areas of the San Diego Unified School District have been designated Overflow Areas.  Overflow Areas are created when local schools are so overcrowded that it is necessary to transport students to nearby schools with available space.   If you reside in one of these areas, you will be provided transportation to the designated schools.  NOTE TO ATTENDANCE STAFF: if a student resides in an overflow area, their resloc will be the school they are being bused from, not the school they are attending.  For example enter a resloc of 059 (Central) if the student resides in the Carver/Clay Busing Area (do not enter 065 or 057)

LOOKUP result: Overflow area for 2005-06:
CARVER/CLAY(BUSED) Students resident in this area are bused to Carver or Clay (based on space availability). This area was formerly part of Central (resloc 059).

District-run school options for areas served by charter schools

Charter school law requires that guaranteed alternate placement be available for families who do not want their children to attend a charter school.  Each of the charter schools that were converted from district-run neighborhood schools serve their historic boundary as indicated in the results of the School Site Boundary Lookup.   The table below lists the district-run schools that residents of these areas may choose instead of the neighborhood charter school. Transportation is not provided if a district-run option is chosen.

LOOKUP result: Your District-run school option(s) for 2005-06:
DARNALL (K-5) Carver (K-5)
KING (K-5) Chollas/Mead (K-5) or Emerson/Bandini (K-5)
