Overview
This year the San Diego City Schools (SDCS) Police Services was selected
to host the 15th annual San Diego County Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive
benefiting Children's
Hospital and Health Center .
While it's
called the Teddy Bear drive, any type of new stuffed animal is accepted.
Last year, about 37,000 stuffed animals were donated countywide, with more
than 2,000 coming from SDCS employees and school sites. This year, the
goal was to collect 50,000 stuffed animals and monetary donations to purchase
additional fuzzy friends year-round. The long-term goal is to collect enough
stuffed animals to provide one for each of the approximately 300,000 children
treated at Children's Hospital each year.
School Police Services has been a proud participant in this event since its inception, and in recent years, Transportation Services has also played a key part by providing buses to deliver the hundreds of bears collected within SDCS to Children's Hospital.
This year's drive included a number of collection events and opportunities
throughout the year, including concerts and sporting events.
Getting Involved
Donations of new teddy bears and other stuffed animals can be made at any time at School Police Services, located at the Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal St., San Diego. Collection bins will also be placed at school sites and businesses throughout the region as the drive progresses. Please note that, due to the need for infection control among recipients, donated toys must be new and unused. Monetary donations are also accepted, and enable organizers to purchase high volumes of teddy bears at a discounted price from participating vendors and businesses. If you are interested in providing a monetary donation, please contact Sergeant Mike Marquez at (619) 725-7005 or mmarquez2@sandi.net. Your contribution is tax-deductible.
