Everyone has a neighborhood school, but sometimes
parents and their families want a choice.

Magnet Schools Goals and Characteristics

Magnet schools have a specialized educational program that responds to students' interests by offering unique opportunities for in-depth experiences and rigorous academics.

  • They have diversity as an aspirational goal.
  • They seek to improve achievement for all students participating in the school.
  • They provide a distinctive curriculum or educational approach.
  • They attract students from outside an assigned neighborhood attendance zone.

SDUSD holds a district membership in Magnet Schools of America (MSA), the leading source for information on public school magnet programs. MSA provides leadership for innovative instructional programs that promote equity, diversity, and academic excellence for all students.

SDUSD received the 2007-2010 Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) federal grant. This funding created four new magnet school programs and will significantly revise two existing magnet schools. Learn more.
