Dual Enrollment Information

Dual Enrollment Information for SDUSD Staff

Students who are enrolled at participating SDUSD high schools may sign up through their counselors to take one or two online courses through iHigh Virtual Academy. This is accomplished through "dual enrollment," in which the student is taking classes through both the "home" high school and iHigh Virtual Academy. Approximately 500 students from 22 sites are currently dual-enrolled in online iHigh courses.

In order to participate in the iHigh Dual Enrollment Program, each school site must have a designated Counselor (who is the contact person for scheduling the online classes), as well as at least one designated Mentor (usually a teacher) who is responsible for monitoring student progress, arranging local tutoring, proctoring exams, and maintaining communications with the online instructor.

Changes for 2011-2012:

  • Counselors no longer directly schedule their students into the iHigh track. Instead, counselors email the scheduling information to Dual Enrollment Coordinator Maureen Cottrell (mcottrell@sandi.net) by the designated deadlines:
    • Student name (first/last)
    • Student ID #
    • Student email address - needed to email log-in information
    • Parent email address - needed for parents to receive weekly email progress reports
    • Course number(s)
    • Semester version is assumed unless quarter version is specified (Quarter version not available for AP, Spanish or French)
    • Core version is assumed unless AP or other version is specified
    • Name of on-site Mentor who will be the contact person for each student (monitoring progress, proctoring exams, etc.)
  • Counselors still use the iHigh Lab code (1855) for attendance.
  • School sites provide their own textbooks, headphones, graphing calculators, etc., or send email request to iHigh.
  • School sites will manage their own AP exams, even if the AP course is taken through iHigh.
  • DROP DEADLINE: Students will not be allowed drop an online course after 4 weeks for quarter classes or 6 weeks for semester classes.
Counselors should please carefully review Dual Enrollment documents posted below. For special needs students, counselors should discuss requested accommodations with iHigh staff in advance to ensure they can be met within the limitations of the online program, and provide a copy of the IEP or 504 plan. Sites must have a parent permission slip on file for each student for each online class, as well as a signed Academic Honesty Policy for each school year. Sites should please provide a parent email address to iHigh so that parents can receive the weekly email progress reports for the online courses. Please direct any questions to Maureen Cottrell, iHigh Dual Enrollment Coordinator, at mcottrell@sandi.net.

If you are a Counselor or potential Mentor and would like to participate in the Dual Enrollment program, please get principal approval, then download the Site Information Form below and return via email or fax to Maureen Cottrell (mcottrell@sandi.net, fax 619-209-4566). This will allow iHigh to process you for the permissions you will need to participate.
