SCPA and the Community

SCPA's full orchestra of 75 students from the Instrumental Music program comprised the pit orchestra for the recent production of The Secret Garden in partnership with the California Youth Conservatory from January 8-23, 2011.

On Monday, January 24, 2011, Cox Channel 4 aired Highlights from California, which featured an in-depth comprehensive story on SCPA and its illustrious history over the past 33 years as a dedicated public arts magnet school. The SCPA segment on Highlights from California will be featured on Cox Channel 4 statewide throughout the year and it is also posted online at http://www.californialifehd.com.

From January 27 through 29, 2011, SCPA dancers performed and attended the International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference in Los Angeles, CA. Marco Bonnes, a SCPA senior, performed a solo dance called "Conversations with God" choreographed by SCPA dance instructor, Sandra Foster King. SCPA dancers particpated in classes with members from the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Garth Fagan, Rennie Harris and Donald Byrd.

On January 29, 2011, sixty-six SCPA students performed music by Beethoven and Brahms at the San Diego Youth Symphony Concert with San Diego's Young Artists at Copley Symphony Hall at 3 pm. More information is available at www.sdyas.org or 619.235.8067.

On January 13, 2011, Mitzi Lizarraga, Principal of SCPA, received a Years of Service Award recognizing her as an educational leader who continues to champion the mission of public arts magnet schools at the annual Arts Schools Network(ASN) conference in partnership with Disney and the National Association of Music Merchants(NAMM). Ms. Lizarraga, a past president of the ASN, served ten years on the Board of Directors in several leadership roles.
