Since 1978, the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), has been a vibrant professional learning community of aspiring artists, scholars, and leaders for students in grades 6 through 12. As a college preparatory, arts magnet public school for students, SCPA has prepared our students to continue their studies at numerous prestigious colleges and universities throughout the United States such as Carnegie Mellon, the New England Conservatory, UCLA, New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Boston University, UCSD, and Juilliard. SCPA counts five Tony Award winners among its alumni and countless graduates who are working in the arts and entertainment industry.
Being a part of SCPA comes with much responsibility. Our students, faculty, parents, partners and volunteers know that team work is a prerequisite to success in their artistic and life endeavors – each of us must do our best at all times for the group to excel. Our curriculum is designed with a balance of catering to the development of young minds to become analytical and creative problem solvers, to communicate effectively, to see a global perspective, to become intellectual risk-takers, and to always approach their work with an ethical and disciplined manner. In the training of young artists, one often hears that the fun is in the work. I see this everyday in a variety of ways – in rehearsals for the Senior Dance production or Remembering August Wilson. I see students excited about the possibilities of auditioning for The Who’s Tommy, in partnership with the San Diego Repertory Theatre. All dedicated students who work hard at SCPA will be successful beyond graduation regardless of what post-secondary studies they pursue. A solid education that balances the arts with academics creates life long learners, instills personal discipline, and engages the imagination. These are qualities that are highly valued in most careers.
