Clairemont High School Student Dress Code

Students are expected to exercise sound judgment, safety, good taste and modesty regarding their dress and grooming. Any clothing considered to be disruptive to the educational process is inappropriate for school.
The CHS interpretation of modesty, as stated above, is as follows:
  • Bellies must be covered and shirts must touch the tops of pants
  • Undergarments may not be exposed
  • No strapless shirts, completely bare shoulders, halter tops, or athletic tank tops (A-Shirts)
  • No sagging pants
  • Shorts/skirts that are too short and are a disruption to the educational process will not be permitted. A good rule of thumb is that the bottom of a student's shorts/skirt must reach or extend beyond the fingertips when the student's arms are at their side
  • Clothing must be clean, in good appearance, and not too revealing
  • Wallet chains are not permitted
  •  Footwear (sandals or shoes) must be worn at all times while students are at school or at school-sponsored activities (house slippers, house shoes or shoes considered unsafe due to heel height, etc. are not acceptable footwear)
  • Sleepwear, blankets and pajamas are not permitted
  • Hats and hoods are not permitted to be worn indoors

Garments, Backpacks and Accessories Must Not display:
  • Profane, sexually suggestive, obscene language or pictures
  • Vulgar gestures
  • Racial, ethnic or sexist slurs or images
  • Messages about drugs, alcohol or tobacco
  • Images depicting violence
  • Gang related graffiti
Hat Policy
Only school appropriate hats and beanies will be permitted on campus. All other head coverings (handkerchiefs, rags, earmuffs, do rags, skull caps, head stocking caps) will be confiscated. All items not picked up by the end of each grading period will be donated.
Student ID Cards and Lanyards
For safety and security purposes (per the recommendation of SDPD and SDUSD Police), all students are expected to have their ID's with them at all times. Please see the Clairemont High ID/Lanyard Policy for additional information.
Consequences
Students who are caught violating the CHS Dress Code will be required to wear a loaner item while the inappropriate item will be confiscated. In some circumstances, a student may be required to go home in order to change. On the first infraction, confiscated items will be returned at the end of the day in exchange for the loaner item. Thereafter, lunch detention must be completed before confiscated items will be returned. Additionally, parents will be contacted. Repeat offenders may receive further consequences which may include a parent conference, in-school suspension, Saturday school and formal suspension.
