Hoover High School Athletics
Athletic Director- Ron Lardizabal CAAPrincipal- Dr. Charles Podhorsky
VP of Athletics- Andy Trakas
The athletic program of Hoover High School is a dynamic integral part of the educational experience. It provides meaningful learning opportunities not otherwise offered in the classroom curriculum. It assists students in developing habits, attitudes, and ideals necessary for ethical competition and cooperation in our society. It also provides them with lifelong lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork, ethical behavior, perseverance, commitment, loyalty, self-discipline, pride, cooperation, responsibility, and leadership skills. Every student at Hoover has the opportunity to try-out for a team if you meet the requirements of the San Diego City Schools and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
Under state law, school districts are required to ensure that all members of school athletic teams have accidental injury insurance that covers medical and hospital expenses. The insurance requirement can be met by the school district offering insurance or other health benefits that cover medical and hospital expenses (Education code Section 32221.5). Some pupils may qualify to enroll in no-cost or low-cost local, state, or federally sponsored health insurance programs. Information about these programs may be obtained by calling or contacting the Hoover Health Clinic.
Hoover's Athletic Director voted 2012-13 San Diego County Athletic Director of the Year
"Hoover High School’s Athletic Director, Ron Lardizabal, was voted the San Diego County Athletic Director of the Year by the High School Sports Association of San Diego (HSSA) in February 2012. The announcement was made at HSSA’s All-Star Winter Awards Night in Marina Village. This is a wonderful honor bestowed by HSSA’s board, which includes highly experienced and prominent people in the San Diego sports community and history."
Chuck Podhorsky, Ed. D.
"The culture of success and achievement that Coach L has created around the athletics department has also spurred many other programs around campus to greater achievement and we now have student-athletes that represent Hoover and the city heights community in a way that makes all of us proud."
