My name is Julie Ashton-Gray and I am honored to be the principal of McKinley Elementary IB World School for the last 11 years. I began my teaching career in San Diego years as a special education teacher at Bell Jr. High. After 18 years at Bell, I transferred to Freese Elementary as a resource teacher and moved to Vice Principal of Kroc Middle School prior to coming to McKinley. I attended Dominican University in San Rafael and received my BA in Sociology and masters in special education. I completed my administrative credential at Point Loma Nazarene and San Diego State University. I am originally from Salinas, California, and moved to San Diego with my best friend from high school for my teaching job at Bell. There I met my husband, Bill Gray who was also a teacher. Bill, now retired, taught at Bell and Morse High School where he taught architectural drawing and computer applications. Both my mother and sister were teachers so teaching has always been in my blood and heart. I am blessed with three sons who are now 28, 26, and 22. We live in Jamul where I love spending my free time gardening, reading, cycling, walking, and relaxing with my family and friends. After my recent hip replacement, my newest passion to keep in shape is taking spinning classes at 24 Hour Fitness. As a family, we have traveled extensively throughout the United States in a motor home and have visited 49 of the 50 states. Our family loves adventure and backpacking. My husband and I have been fortunate to begin traveling internationally to broaden our experiences and diversify our adventures. As principal of McKinley IB World School, my goal is to provide the students and families a top quality educational experience. I am proud of our collective work over the years as a strong and vital learning community to make McKinley the school of choice for North Park families!
