School Days

Getting Started

Arrival time for students at Hearst is at 7:30 a.m. This is when supervision begins on the blacktop and breakfast is served. For their safety, please do not let children come to school earlier. The morning run/walk program also begins at this time.

Children in all grades line up in their designated class area on the blacktop when the first bell rings at 7:45 a.m. All classes begin when the second bell rings at 7:50 a.m.

Please have students at school in time for the start of the day. Tardy students disrupt the classroom and the students miss important instruction.

If your child is late, they must go to the office to obtain a tardy slip before going to class. If your child will be absent, please call the office before 8:30 a.m. at (619) 583-5704. School office hours are 7:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

School Hours at Hearst

  • M/T/Th/F: 7:50 a.m. - 2:15 p.m.

  • Wednesdays: 7:50 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

    • Lunch for students that ride the bus or students that are enrolled in our after school SAY program is at 12:30 p.m. All other students are welcome to eat lunch on campus at 12:30 p.m., but please pick up your children at 1:00 p.m.

Daily Schedule

  • 7:30 a.m.: Students arrive at school.

    • Students having breakfast can proceed to cafeteria, while others can participate in our Running Club program or line up in their class area on the blacktop. Please note rainy day schedule: all students must go directly to their classroom and wait for instruction to begin.

  • 7:45 a.m.: First bell, students line up on the blacktop

  • 7:50 a.m.: Classroom Instruction Begins

  • Please do not allow children to arrive before 7:30 a.m.

Morning Recess

  • 10:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.

  • Please be sure your child has a snack

Lunch and Lunch Recess

  • Kindergarten & 1st grade: 11:40 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.

    • (11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on rainy day)

  • 2nd & 3rd grade: 12:00 p.m. - 12:40 p.m.

    • (12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. on rainy day)

  • 4th & 5th grade: 12:20 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

    • (12:30 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. on rainy day)

  • All grades eat first and then are released to play


Students may bring a lunch or purchase one in the cafeteria. Lunches and milk may be paid for singularly or prepaid in quantity in the cafeteria before school. To conveniently replenish your child's account online, access the PayPAMs open in new window website and register. If a child forgets lunch, he/she may obtain a cafeteria voucher from the office.
