A message from our principal, Dr. Cecilia Fernández /Un mensaje de la directora, Dra. Cecilia Fernández: Hello Spreckels Families - (en Español abajo) Welcome to the 2012-13 School Year! We have opened with about 740 students in 28 classrooms. Our PTA is active and ready to go! Please don't forget to join the PTA. Besides being a member, your help is needed! The PTA has lined up a variety of enrichment programs both before and after school. Many fliers went home on 9-11-12 in the "Tuesday" envelope. All volunteers who work with children or go on field trips must have first completed a Volunteer Application and have a clear TB test. TB tests are valid for four years. Please complete these two items BEFORE volunteering in the classroom or planning to go on a field trip. Daily school attendance is very important. School hours are 9:05 - 3:35 with Wednesday dismissal at 12:30 p.m. Please be on time for school. Supervision begins at 8:45 a.m. and we have a breakfast program and a Running Club on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning at 8:35 a.m. Parents are welcome to join in. Whenever possible, please schedule doctor or dentist appointments on Wednesday afternoon or outside of school time. Please schedule vacations or trips during school holidays. If your child is ill, please call the school office with the reason for the absence. We have to verify each absence and it really helps us if you call with the reason. The office is open 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and we do have a phone machine where you can leave a message. Parking around the school can be hectic. The staff parking lot is for staff members only. We ask that parents find parking on the street (Stadium - west side only or Governor). Please never park or stop in the bus zone on Stadium - east side even if it is "only" to pick up or drop off your child. You're probably hearing about nation-wide Common Core Standards. Hemos abiertocon 28 salones y aproximadamente 740 estudiantes. Nuestro PTA (Asociaciónde Pades y Mestros) está lista para empezar a trabajar! Aparte deser miembro del PTA, su ayuda es muy necesaria. La oficinaabre de 8:00 a.m. a 4:00 p.m. y tenemos una máquina contestadora donde puededejar un mensaje. Estacionarse afuera de la escuela puede ser ajetreado y elestacionamiento del personal es unicamente para trabajadores de laescuela. Les pedimos a los padres que busquen estacionamiento en la calleStadium, solamente en el lado Este o en Gobernor. Por favor nunca seestacionen o se detengan en la zona del autobus escolar en la calle Stadium-lado Este, aún si es "solamente" para dejar o recoger a su hijo/a. Estamos ansiosos por trabajar con ustedes. Si hayalgún problema, platique primeramente con el maestro. La forma más fácilde comunicarse con el maestro/a es por medio de un correo electrónico. Gracias. About Me I absolutely love being a principal. I think it's the perfect match for me - I'm really "good" with kids - they are the easy part of this job! I have been a teacher, high school counselor, adult education teacher, central office resource teacher, vice principal, and elementary principal with San Diego Unified School District since 1979. My undergraduate degree and bilingual teaching credential were completed at the University of California, Davis. Go Aggies! I have a masters degree in Counseling and a Pupil Services Credential from San Diego State University. My Doctor of Education is from the University of Southern California. I understand the hard work it takes to be a parent - I always say, "The 750 children at school are easy! It's the 2 kids in my house that are tough. I can't send them "home" to anyone." Teaching is my life's passion and I learn daily from your child!! I couldn't be happier here at Spreckels. I taught here in the early 80s and actually applied to return to be the principal. Spreckels is a wonderful place for your child to grow and learn. We have many dedicated and hard working staff members - all here for your children! District curriculum materials, instructional strategies and supports, staff professional development, and student assessments are aligned with state standards and focus on ensuring that students have access to a high-quality, rigorous, and engaging instructional program. Our teachers, staff, and students are dedicated to excellence and hard work to maintain a rigorous, high-quality, integrated instructional environment. All classrooms are a part of the Bilingual Magnet Program. Both English as a Second Language (or English Language Development) and Spanish as a Second Language (SSL) are taught. We have a full-time Music Prep Time teacher and a part-time Language Technology Prep Time teacher. All students rotate through these two programs. Parent Involvement Parents, we NEED you! Spreckels is grateful and prides itself for having so many parents involved in our school. Parents have many opportunities to be involved – as a classroom volunteer, PTA member, School Site Council/Governance Team, chaperone on field trips, just to name a few. All volunteers must complete and have on file a current volunteer application which includes proof of a clear TB test. We also ask that parents support their children at home by making school work and school attendance a priority. It is important that children come to school on time and are only absent when ill. Please schedule family vacations during break or summer vacation. Please attempt to schedule routine doctor, dentist, etc., appointments for Wednesday afternoons (our minimum day) or during break or vacations. Children cannot learn if they are not present and state funding to the school district is dependent on students being present each day. Any absence other than illness, bereavement, religious holidays, or family emergency is unexcused. Teacher/Parent Conferences are formally held twice per year. You are encouraged to stay in touch with your child’s teacher on a regular basis. The easiest way to communicate with a teacher is by email. You can find the teacher’s email address on this website. Teachers cannot speak with parents during instruction time or five minutes before the bell. If you need to contact the teacher to arrange a time outside of the instructional day, please email him or her. If your child is experiencing difficulties, please be in close communication with the classroom teacher. We also have a school counselor here on a limited basis. We are here to support you and your family in any way we can. Thank you for trusting us with your child. Participación de los padres defamilia Padres de familia, ¡LOS NECESITAMOS! La escuela Spreckels está agradecida y se enorgullece de tener tantos padres de familia involucrados con nuestra escuela. Los padres de familia tienen muchas oportunidades para participar – ya sea como voluntarios en el salón de clases, como miembros del PTA, como parte del Consejo del Sitio Escolar (SSC), como acompañante en los paseos, solo por nombrar algunas opciones. Los niños no pueden aprender si no están presentes y los fondos del estado para la escuela dependen de que el estudiante este presente cada día. Si su hijo/a está experimentando dificultades, manténgase en contacto con el maestro/a. También tenemos consejera escolar de tiempo limitado.
