My name is Mr. Rudy Akoni Derige (DEE-RIDGE). I am delighted and honored that this community has chosen me to lead Chesterton Elementary. I am excited to meet all of you, your children, the staff, and community members. I am a firm believer in the home/school connection. Therefore, I will continue to keep parents and community members informed on a regular basis using the school’s website, school newsletter, and utilizing the district’s automated calling system to send out important school announcements. In the first three months of the 2013-2014 school year, I will be closely observing and learning about the traditions and school culture of Chesterton Elementary in order to support and improve the great work that is currently taking place at our school. I look forward to working closely with the Chesterton school community and hope to support all families to ensure that all of our students continue to have a productive and joyful journey of learning.
I just wanted to share a little bit about myself. I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai’i. I attended the University of Hawai’i and was recruited to bowl on the nationally ranked bowling team at San Diego State University in 1992. I have a Masters of Education degree in Cross-Cultural teaching from National University and a Masters of Education degree in Educational Leadership from the University of San Diego. I love to read and compete in bowling tournaments during my spare time.
Professionally, I have worked in the district for 16 years. I began my work with students as a teacher’s aide before becoming a teacher. I have taught Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades. Along with my classroom experience, I have had leadership experiences as a Reading Recovery Teacher, Peer Coach/Staff Developer, Project Resource Teacher, Beginning Teacher Support Provider, Dean of Students, Vice-Principal, and Principal. Simultaneously, I worked part-time as a sales associate for Lakeshore Learning Materials for two years and 12 years as an Educational Consultant for Whoo’s Smart in Mira Mesa. I believe my variety of experiences have enabled me to gain valuable knowledge in understanding the roles and responsibilities we each play in shaping young minds to be lifelong learners and prepared for the 21st Century.
Please feel free to contact me at the school with any questions, concerns, or just to introduce yourself. Working together only enhances your child’s educational experiences. My hope is that we collaboratively work together towards contributing to even greater success in the future for Chesterton.
