Welcome to Room 7!

We are going to go on some fantastic learning adventures this month.
Let the learning begin . . .

Readers' and Writers' Workshop: The young authors of room 7 will be writing nonfiction narratives for authentic purposes.  Throughout this writing journey, I will model how to weave in sound effects, dialogue, descriptive words, and sensory imagery to help bring my own writing to life.  Through read alouds, we will be looking at the craft moves that famous authors use to help paint pictures in our minds.  I will cheer incredibly loud when I see my craft moves and the craft moves of famous authors being skillfully placed into the writing of my own students.

Math Workshop:

The children will be solving addition and subtraction problems in a variety of ways. The children will be sharing how they solve mathematical problems using a handful of strategies. Please ask your child to show you different ways to solve a math problem. It is important that your child knows their math facts up to 20 without using their fingers. You can play dice games or use flash cards to help them memorize their facts.

The math wizards of room 7 are now having fun with place value.  Ask your child to show you the PV Move, Expanded Notation, the TO Chart, and other place value moves.  Their "Place Value" knowledge will surprise you.  Click here for math enrichment activities.

Science:

The children in room 7 are transforming into geologist and studying the different properties of rocks. We will be looking at volcanic rock samples, river rocks, and discussing how boulders will eventually erode into tiny particles of clay.

Throughout the year, we will be exploring some interesting animals that inhabit the Earth.  The children will transform into scientists and gather information to help them determine what makes an animal belong to a certain animal species.  The children will also be learning about the incredible metamorphosis of creatures that belong to the insect and amphibian world.  We will be taking a closer look at the unique life-cycles of the platypus, the hairy arachnid, and some scaley reptiles.

Social Studies:  The children are learning about what life was like in the past. We have also been sharing interesting artifacts, family traditions, and sharing amazing information about our family's histories.

Mark Your Calendar

Hi Parents!  Parent Conferences are right around the corner and I can't wait to chat with you all.  Please stop by room 7 and sign up for a special day to discuss your child's progress.  You will discover a huge sign-up sheet displayed on the door closest to the playground.  I look forward to meeting with each and everyone of you!  Cheers!

Boo!  Room Seven will be having a Halloween Bash on Monday, October 31st.  After lunch, the kids will throw on their costumes, create a handful of spooktacular crafts, munch on ghoulish treats, and end their day walking in a spooky school-wide parade.  We had a bootastic time at our Halloween bash. I would like to thank all of my spooktacular parents for joining in on the fun and running our fangtastic centers.

During Writers' Workshop, the talented authors of room 7 have been busy weaving incredible nonfiction narratives.   These magical true-life tales will bring a smile to your face and fill your heart with joy.  We will be having our first publishing celebration on Friday, November 4th from 9:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  These young authors are so excited to share their masterpieces with their amazing families. Please stop by and sign up to bring in some healthy breakfast items for this fun event.  You will find the sign-up list hanging upon our classroom door.    Wow!  Thank you parents for coming to our first writing celebration.  We had a packed house and I was so incredibly proud of my young authors.  The children had so much fun sharing their published pieces with their family and friends.

We will be traveling to the Birch Aquarium on Thursday, November 17th.  Make no bones about it!  The student in room 7 will become marine paleontologists as they discover how different types of fossils are created and what they teach scientists about the past.  The students will unearth the mysteries of ocean fossils by performing a mini-excavation, matching fossils to present-day relatives, and creating a take-home fossil.

Ho...Ho...Ho!  Don't forget to mark your calendars...Mrs. Gawle's annual holiday party will be on Sunday, December 18th.  I will be sending more exciting information via the Tuesday Envelope when the date creeps closer. It should be a fun-filled night filled with happiness and awe.

Room 7 be hopping on the U.S.S. Midway on Friday, April 27th.  On the ship, the students will first learn about real historical American heroes.  During their visit to the Midway, they will learn about the unknown but courageous and dedicated individuals who performed their duties for their country under dangerous conditions.  Finally, the students will think about heroes they know, people in their lives who demonstrate heroism in some way.  All of these heroes, from the famous to the not so famous, are "people who make a difference."
