Whitman Elementary School is an exciting place of learning. I am proud to be the principal of this special school, where so many people work hard to make a difference for our students. This is my fifth year at this jewel of a school, small and precious and filled with lively and engaged students and staff. A lot of hard work has been invested in helping our students reach their potential, no matter what challenges they face. That dedication creates a climate of collegiality. People give above and beyond here. My goal is to maintain this excellence. Our expectation is that every student will grow socially and academically in order to be prepared to continue their growth upon leaving Whitman.
The arts thrive at Whitman. Every student is exposed to units of music, visual arts, theater and dance, taught by professional experts in those fields and their classroom teachers. Students take multiple field trips and enjoy assemblies each year. Students in grades 3-4 and 5-6 from Whitman, under the guidance of their music teacher, Tom Waczek, learned 16 pieces of classical music throughout the school year as part of the Music Memory Program. These students participate in an event sponsored by San Diego Winds, who featured a 21st century version of the old "Name That Tune" TV show as teams from elementary schools competed to see who could identify snippets of songs played by a live orchestra. Whitman students continue to win gold and silver in this event yearly.
Whitman cares about physical fitness. As part of the curriculum, students participate in a Physical Education class once a week and complete additional physical activities during the week with the classroom teachers. Students also sponsor and participate in a yearly jog-a-thon and have use those funds to purchase P.E equipment and a program which will track the number of laps they run during the morning run club.
Knowing that students must be good citizens in order to be productive and enjoy freedoms in our society, Whitman works diligently to ensure students understand acceptable norms of behavior. The Whitman Pledge is the following;
I will act in such a way that I will be proud of myself and others will be proud of me, too.
I came to school to learn and I will learn. I will have a good day!
Students who take this pledge to heart find that doing these things really helps as they grow and learn.
As the principal of these wonderful students, I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve you and your children. Whitman has been in existence over 50 years and in that time, it has established itself as a strong community school where staff and families work together for the good of its children. It is my hope that we will continue that strong tradition and many more children will grow up to lead productive, happy lives with the foundation they have built at Whitman.
