Volunteer Program

The Volunteer Program provides support and guidance to schools to help them facilitate their parent and community engagement programs.  Currently, more than 29,000 volunteers work in a variety of capacities in the San Diego Unified School District.

These volunteers - parents, guardians, grandparents, business/community partners, community members, the military, K-12 and college students, senior citizens, and others - represent the economic, social, racial, religious and educational backgrounds within the San Diego community.
 
Volunteers act as tutors/mentors, provide assistance in the classroom, participate as senior exhibition panel members, participate on business/community partnership advisory boards, assist in the main office, in the library/media centers and with fundraising efforts for school foundations, scholarships, field trips, etc.

In order to provide students with a safe environment and allow for a variety of opportunities for volunteering, volunteer participation is classified into four categories.  Depending on the category, certain screening processes must be completed by district staff prior to volunteering. Getting Started

All schools are asked to designate a school site volunteer coordinator. All volunteer work must be done under the direction of an assigned teacher, site volunteer coordinator, principal or vice principal.  Volunteers must comply with the district's volunteer screening requirements.
 
Community members interested in volunteering should:
  1. Contact the school to ask to speak with the volunteer coordinator.  School Directory.

  4. Read and acknowledge understanding of the Volunteer Code of Conduct: (English)  (Spanish) pdf  
  5. Provide results of Tuberculin skin test.

Contact Information

Due to budget cuts, the Community Relations Department has been eliminated. As of July 1, 2011, there will be no central office coordination of school volunteers and partnerships in education. These programs will be handled individually at the school site.
